After the man is made and brought to his task, God puts the man to sleep to prepare the woman. This 'sleeping' in Genesis 2 is a change in focus from the man to the 'wo-man'. The man is 'off the scene' and God is preparing the woman to come forth out of him. It is after this that the woman is finally made from the rib of the man.
