We are conditioned to believe that we are supposed to put our partner's needs ahead of our own and to be 'the selfless one', the one who's always thinking of others first. This is conditioned into us as little girls. We're brainwashed into not being selfish when we're considering our own desires and needs; we're taught early on that it's selfish to think of others first, and so we bring this into our adult romantic relationships, even when it is detrimental.
