Midday is the hour photographers avoid and the hour concrete looks best. The sun comes straight down, the walls go pale grey and every joint, tie hole and formwork line shows. The shadows are black and have corners. We shot in brutalist courtyards, under a colonnade, once in an empty room with the light coming through a side door in a single hard slab, and nobody softened anything.
