The Minoans built Western Europe's first sophisticated civilization on the island of Crete, thriving through extensive maritime trade for copper, tin, and luxury goods like purple dye. Despite their peaceful, outward-looking culture and magnificent palaces, their society was vulnerable to natural disasters, most notably the cataclysmic volcanic eruption of Thera and subsequent tsunamis. These environmental shocks triggered severe social upheaval, internal religious conflicts, and likely famine, which ultimately weakened the population. Although mainland Mycenaean Greeks eventually took control of the island, further widespread regional collapse forced the remaining Minoans to abandon their coastal homes for isolated mountain refuges.
