In late September, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, which controlled most of Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region, launched offensives against the Ethiopian government following months of rising tensions between the two sides. However, the Ethiopian military rapidly gained the upper hand, entering the regional capital Mekelle on October 3 and pressing further north, following which reporting suggests that Eritrea deployed thousands of troops to northern Tigray.
